Dimply Plum Cake

Michelle of Bake-en chose Dimply Plum Cake for this week's recipe challenge. I was very excited to bake this cake because I love plums. My favorite way, however, to really eat a plum is just fresh with salt on it. I know some of you will gag, but I'm a real salt lover. Salt makes almost any fruit taste better in my opinion.

Before I move on to the whats, whys, and how-to's of actually baking the cake, I have to brag and show off my new KA mixer! After three trips to the store returning first a Sunbeam, then a KA that was scratched, I finally got my sought after, shiny, bright red KA mixer that I have always wanted. I love it. Here it is:
I know. You aren't jealous because you ALL already have one! Well it is my first one so just be a tiny bit happy for me.
Now for the baking part. My plums must have been humongous because I only needed five plums to fill the top of the cake instead of the called for eight. Maybe it isn't the right season for plums because the store did not have a lot to choose from. I used the orange zest in it and the smell of the oranges and cardomom coming from my kitchen while the cake was baking was sending me into orbit trying to be patient the 40 minutes it was baking. I could not wait to try it. I almost put on some island music just to set the mood for my island smelling cake.

Finally, the timer went off and I ran to the kitchen to check out my masterpiece. I let it cool the allotted 15 minutes and then I arranged it on my serving plate. As I cut into it I noticed it was a bit crumbly. I cut myself a slice, dug my fork into it, took my first bite, and I am sorry to say I was disappointed. But in all fairness, I think I was expecting something sweeter. It would be great in the morning with your coffee. Okay - I know - that is what it really is, a coffee cake. I just was expecting something different. You know that feeling like when you are a child and you get your heart set on a Malibu Barbie and then you wake up Christmas morning and you have a wedding Barbie instead? It's not that you don't like the wedding Barbie, you just wanted something different. To be completely honest, I doubt I make this again, but then again I might if I specifically need a coffee cake. You know in recipes, as in life in general. . . you win some, you lose some. That is not to say my DH and I did not dig right in and eat about half the cake the first night! It doesn't go so well with wine. I'm sure coffee would be better with it.

This morning my cake was missing a few plums. When I asked the DH about it, he simply said they fell out when he was cutting his cake and he ate them. Now I have crater cake left over. . . talk about dimply. . . . . .

((((GASP))))!!! Peggy, your shiny red Kitchenaid is truly a vision! It does not matter what else happens in your kitchen this week -- you can just sit there and be happy because you have the prettiest mixer in the whole wide world sitting right there on your countertop! You know, this cake really WAS kind of like Wedding Barbie!! I won't make it again, either. But David says that I won't even make the recipes I love again, because how can I possibly fit it in around our weekly challenges? Anyway, your cake looks wonderful!!!

i eat watermelon with salt which shocks people...but it's so good with salt! now i'll have to try it on plums. we didn't like this one so much, either, but there's always next week!
Ohhh, love your new KA, what a beauty! I've never heard of salting plums, but you know what, I will give it a try, I love salty and I love plums so I bet I would enjoy it too. Sorry this cake wasn't a winner for you guys, I agree it is more of a coffee cake for sure.

I think my grandmother salted her grapefruit. It does bring out the taste of fruit. I have the red KA mini processor and the red KA blender, but when I got my stand mixer, I went with yellow! But the red will always have a special place in my heart. I'm glad your have it!!! Sorry the cake disappointed you. But on the bright side, there's something new next week. and the week after...

Congrats on your new KA mixer. It is beautiful. Sorry you didn't like the cake. I didn't think it was that sweet either. That is probably why I had a piece this morning for breakfast. I felt the same way about it. It was okay, but it wasn't fantastic

You should be sleeping with that KA as hard as you worked to get it! I LOVE IT! I'm jealous of the red (mine's burnt orange....and scratched). I am also jealous that your cake has that "cooked" appearance. I looked at mine in pictures tonight and thought "what the &%^$ possessed me to think that was cooked?!?!" I suppose DH can now stand for "Dimple Helper" as Chan sure helped those two dimples along. hahaha!!! Again, this week, I wish I had tasted yours so I would know what the "real" recipe tasted like. Also, next week, we are allowed to do a rewind!!! This now marks the longest blog comment I've ever left in my life! YAY!

I love your new Kitchenaid! Mine is the exact same one and when I got it I was ecstatic for weeks. I've still been known to fondly wipe it down anytime I'm cleaning the kitchen. They are the best, I hope you love it!

Now I'm feeling nostalgic--I had a Malibu Barbie. =) Your cake looks great, even if it wasn't quite what you wanted it to be. And enjoy your new toy!

Your cake looks absolutely gorgeous!
Too bad you're not very happy with your new camera. I'm now contemplating on buying a Panasonic F-5

I have to admit, I came close to just eating the fruit out of the middle of this cake too. It's plain, but the fruit (to me) makes it better and a perfect breakfast cake.

That is sooo pretty. You're right-I am jealous. My old white one is going to die anyday now from overuse and then I'm buying that red one. The cake is gorgeous!

Something tells me that "fell out of the cake" means "were pried out with a spoon." I had the same temptation, let me tell you!
No, I don't have a Kitchenaid -- well, yes I do, it's a fairly new Kitchenaid hand-held power mixer. Before that I made do with whisks and an old-fashioned rotary eggbeater. But stand mixer? No, and I'm so envious!

Congratulations!
